Can I drive in Spain with my foreign license?

Driving rules for foreigners in Spain depend on your origin: EU license holders can drive indefinitely in Spain with their EU license — no exchange required (though registering it with the DGT is recommended after becoming resident).

UK license holders (post-Brexit) can drive for up to 6 months, then must exchange their license for a Spanish one.

The UK-Spain exchange agreement allows direct exchange without a driving test.

Non-EU license holders can drive for up to 6 months with an International Driving Permit (IDP), after which they must obtain a Spanish license (which may require a theory and practical test).

If you become a Spanish resident, you should register your car with Spanish plates within 30 days.

Importing a car involves paying registration tax (based on CO2 emissions and car value) and ITV inspection (equivalent to MOT).

Many expats find it easier to buy a car locally.

Key driving differences: drive on the right, roundabouts go counterclockwise, speed limits in km/h (120 km/h on motorways).
