How do Belgian and Dutch citizens apply for a NIE number in Spain?
The NIE number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is an essential identification number that all foreign nationals need for any financial transaction in Spain, including property purchases.
Here is how Belgian and Dutch citizens can apply.
Option 1: Apply in your home country — Belgians can apply at the Spanish Embassy in Brussels or the Consulate in Antwerp.
Dutch citizens can apply at the Spanish Embassy in The Hague.
You will need: a completed EX-15 form, your passport (original plus copy), a passport photo, proof of the reason for your application (such as a property reservation contract), and the fee payment (approximately €10-12).
Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks.
Option 2: Apply in Spain — You can apply at a National Police station (Comisaría de Policía Nacional) in Spain that handles foreigner documentation.
In the Alicante province, the main offices are in Alicante, Benidorm, Dénia, and Torrevieja.
You must book an appointment online through the Sede Electrónica website.
Bring: completed EX-15 form, passport (original plus copy), proof of address, reason for application, and payment receipt from a Spanish bank (Modelo 790 tax form, approximately €12).
Processing is usually same-day or within a few days.
Important notes: The NIE number never expires, though the certificate document itself may have an expiration date — the number remains valid permanently.
Your lawyer can also apply on your behalf with a power of attorney.
