What is a TIE card in Spain and how do I get one?
A TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical residency card issued to non-EU nationals living in Spain.
It contains your NIE number, photo, and fingerprints, and serves as your primary identification document in Spain.
EU citizens don't receive a TIE — they get a green A4 certificate (certificado de registro) instead.
To obtain a TIE, you must: have a valid visa or residency authorization, apply at the Oficina de Extranjería within 30 days of entering Spain, book a cita previa online, provide passport, visa, application form (EX-17), 3 passport photos, proof of payment of the fee (approximately €16), and proof of address.
The TIE is valid for the same period as your residency authorization and must be renewed before expiry.
Processing typically takes 30-45 days.
You'll receive a temporary document (resguardo) while your TIE is being manufactured.
The TIE is essential for daily life — you'll need it for banking, official procedures, and identification.
