What is a NIE number and how do I get one in Spain?

A NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a foreigner's identification number required for all financial transactions in Spain, including buying property.

You need it to open a bank account, sign contracts, pay taxes, and complete a property purchase.

To apply, you need your passport, a completed EX-15 form, proof of why you need the NIE (such as a property reservation contract), and two passport-sized photos.

You can apply in person at a Spanish police station (Policía Nacional) with a cita previa appointment booked online, or at a Spanish consulate in your home country.

Processing time varies from same-day to several weeks depending on location.

Many buyers use a legal representative with power of attorney to obtain it on their behalf.

At WOW-Estates, we coordinate with our legal partners to ensure your NIE is processed efficiently, often within 1-2 weeks.

The NIE is valid for life and is essential for every step of your Spanish property purchase.

Without it, you cannot proceed with any official paperwork or financial transactions related to your property acquisition.
