How to get a NIE Number for Belgian Citizens in Spain

Introduction: The Importance of a NIE Number for Belgian Citizens in Spain

Spain, with its sun-kissed coasts, vibrant cities, and rich culture, attracts thousands of foreigners each year who wish to experience the warmth and charm of the country. Whether you plan to enjoy an extended holiday, invest in real estate, or even build a new life on the beautiful Iberian Peninsula, one thing is certain: an essential step for foreigners staying or doing business in Spain is obtaining a NIE number. But what exactly is a NIE number, and why is it so crucial for Belgian citizens living in Spain? In this blog, we take an in-depth look at the process of obtaining a NIE number as a Belgian citizen, the key reasons why it is necessary, and practical tips to make this process run smoothly.

What is a NIE Number?

A NIE number is not just an identification number; it stands for much more than that. It is actually an abbreviation for "Número de Identificación de Extranjeros," which means "Identification Number for Foreigners" in English. This number is not only essential for residents of Spain but also for non-residents who stay in the country for an extended period.

Fortunately, applying for a NIE number is a one-time task, which means you only have to do it once. Once you have it, it is your unique identification number that you can proudly carry in the beautiful Spanish land. So, whether you are a resident who has found their home here, or a traveler seeking adventure, a NIE number is your ticket to experience everything Spain has to offer.

Why Do You Need a NIE Number?

If you plan to stay in Spain for more than three months, a NIE number is a must-have. This number confirms that you are legally residing in Spain and opens the door to many possibilities and official procedures. A NIE number is required for various important matters, including:

  • Filing a tax return in Spain
  • Buying a house in Spain
  • Purchasing a car in Spain
  • Working in Spain
  • Taking out insurance
  • Opening a Spanish bank account
  • Attending a course at a Spanish university
  • Renting out your house or apartment through official channels
  • Starting a business
  • And much more...

In short, a NIE number opens the doors to a smooth and legal stay in Spain and makes it possible to arrange various matters during your stay in this beautiful country.

The Process of Obtaining a NIE Number

Through the Spanish Embassy in Belgium To apply for a NIE number, you must make an appointment via email at the following address: cog.bruselas.nie@maec.es. The waiting time to make an appointment at the Spanish consulate in Brussels is more than three months. Make sure you bring all the necessary documents to the appointment.

Applying in Person at the Police Station in Spain You can go to the local police station (Comisaría de Policía) with a department for foreigners (Departamento de Extranjeros). The only requirement is to come to Spain and be patient while you wait for your turn.

It is wise to inquire in advance whether they work by appointment and on which days you can go to the police. This prevents unnecessary waiting times and ensures that you can go through the process smoothly.

Application through a Power of Attorney With the help of a notarized power of attorney, your lawyer can apply for a NIE number on your behalf. This efficient method means that you grant your lawyer power of attorney, allowing them to take all necessary steps to arrange everything correctly, without you having to be physically present.
